I got interested in making this chikku kolam, after I had read the comments from Jayanthi's kolam (http://www.ikolam.com/node/14107). In order to show the design without any borders/frills, I have drawn the strokes and omitted the central netted square filler that we see in Jayanthi's design. I'm hoping Dawn would find this easy.

The cow, flamingo, girl and the butterfly were all done last year by Surya and Diya. Since it was all done last year, they couldn't remember whose butterfly this one is. And, they had already lost the quilling tool. I have no clue regarding these things.
Mrs.Jayanthi's quilling lessons reminded me of having seen these little critters somewhere in my kids' rooms, and so thought of sharing it here, before these get lost too.

We would like to wish all our members a very happy festival season. With the winter only couple of weeks away, we are eagerly waiting for the margazhi season to begin! We hope you will share your rangoli/kolam creations with us throughout this auspicious season culminating with the Pongal festival.
We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is a time to recognize that God has given us many things to be thankful for, each passing day. The things that we are most thankful for: Love, Family, Health, Friendship --- all of you!!
This rangoli is based on a 6x6 dot grid. I have made use of the horn-shaped wicker basket called cornucopia to make this rangoli. These baskets are filled with various kinds of vegetables and fruits harvested in the fall season, in North America. The cornucopia is also known as the Horn of Plenty, or the Harvest cone, and is a symbol of abundance.

People call this pattern Brahma's knot. It is a dotted kolam. An advanced design which is an extension of this pattern could be found at:

Maattu Pongal is a harvest festival honoring bulls and cows. The farmer cultivating his land depends on bulls, timely rain and the Sun. On this day, the cows and bulls are bathed, adorned with flower garlands and their horns are painted colorfully. Tinkling bells are tied around their neck and they are fed special dishes prepared that day. Bull fights called 'Jallikattu' are also arranged at some places, where young men have to take off the money pouches tied to the horns of ferocious bulls single handed. Another game called "Manji Virattu" is also arranged this day which is basically a cattle race where young men chase ferociously running bulls!
