Rangoli: Magic Mushrooms
Created by SuriK on 2010-06-14,

Here comes Surya's magic mushrooms! We've admired these red spotted mushrooms in story books, but never bothered to find out more about them, until now. The botanical name is Amanita muscaria and the common name is fly agaric or fly Amanita. It is a poisonous kind of fungu, well known for its hallucinogenic properties. It is found in abundance in the cental and northern Europe. According to the legend, the vikings ate these mushrooms to induce their rage.

Curry leaves is our family's favorite herb! It makes the Vadas (spicy doughnuts), and Adai (lentil crepe) taste delicious.

Rangoli: Okra for the veggie patch

Here is an okra collage for the veggie patch.
Top left - Okra "sun". Please observe the cut okra pieces at the bottom of this picture. You'll see holes for seeds with numbers 5, 7, 10, 8 and 6. It never occurred to me that there is this much diversity here.
Top right - Hexagonal pattern with red okras.
Bottom left - Red okras with four-fold (svAstika) symmetry.
Bottom right - Okra "nAmam"!
Enlarged versions of an okra flower and the red okra also shown.
While straight okras are easier to cut, the curved ones are the best for patterns Smile My mother always used to feed me with okras as she felt they are good for the nourishment of the brain! Enjoy!

Rangoli: Brinjals for the Veggie patch
Created by jkmrao on 2010-06-14,

Brinjal or the eggplant may perhaps be called the queen of all Indian vegetables. If one takes the average yield of all food crops (grains, vegetables, fruits, etc.) in weight for a given area of land, the yield for rice is only 70% of the average whereas the yield for brinjals is 200%! Next to China, India produces maximum amount of this crop. It is liked by one and all in India. It has curative properties for cholesterol reduction. Along with beans, eggplant is extremely good in reducing sugar levels for diabetic patients. If you're a diabetic you don't have to swallow the bitter bitter-gourd, but instead get the same desired effect with brinjals and beans. Try brinjal slices in pizza for a change! Here is a collage of brinjals for your pleasure. Enjoy!

Top left - Brinjal clowns (assmebly mine, but idea borrowed)
Top right - Brinjal squares
Bottom left - Beautiful brinjal flowers (look how the ends form a very nice pattern)
Bottom right - Head to tail arrangement of brinjals (two-dimensional model for anti-ferroelectric or anti-ferromagnetic compounds Smile
