This is a maa kolam created on my father-in-law's 80th birthday by my chitti, Girija chitti.
According to the ancient eastern tradition, the gourd is most commonly recognized as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. Here is a dotted kolam design, with a four-fold symmetry.

I've discovered kolams on Sept 2008 on a children's magazine and used them with my pupils at the end of this school year. They love them! I'd like to make kolams as known in Italy as mandalas.
