Rangoli: Holi special

There are several stories about hOli. It is said that since hOlika, the sister of hiraNyakaSipu was immune to fire, he ordered prahlAda to be burnt along with her on a pyre. But he didn't die, she did. Then there is the legend of kRshNA and his rAsakrIDa (garba like dancing). The third one is the burning of kAma, the god of love by Siva. Even though he was burnt and cannot be seen, he is still visible to his wife ratI. The god kAma is known as manasija as he is born in one's mind. According to legend, he has five arrows of flowers -
aravindA (lotus) aimed at the chest causing craziness, aSOka aimed at the lips causing excitement, chUtaM (mango) aimed at the head causing loss of senses, nava mallika (jasmine) aimed at the eyes causing redness and neelOtpala (blue lily) when aimed causes death (metaphoric, not physical :-). In fact, hOli is really Valentine's Day in the Hindu calendar. Last year I took the rAsa theme for the hOli. This year, I have taken all the above five flowers and the bees (they are the string for his bow) and of course the hearts. They may not be all to the proper scale. Still, enjoy and comment!

Rangoli: Hexagonal paDikOlam - 9

The longer parallel side of a trapezium was taken out and a hexagonal pattern was created with the three sides. This forms the central enclosure. A tear shaped motif with dots inside was built. This and its six-fold mates were arranged inside and outside the enclosure. Triangles, 240 degree arcs and lamps were arranged on the outside. Enjoy and comment!

Rangoli: Hexagonal paDikOlam - 8

A paDikOlam in hexagonal shape with only sawtoothed lines, apart from the lamps, has been drawn. Your comments are most welcome. Regards! - mohana

Rangoli: Valentine Day Special

Here is my Valentine Day present! It is overflowing with "love" Smile The letters of the word LOVE were all scooped out of the heart shape. The heart shape itself was made by a method described in http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091214193523AAQqHQS
I added roses, violets and a lump of sugar to go with the popular poem of the Valentine Day. On the right side, you may see an ambigram of VALENTINE. Please show this to members of the various moral protective forces at your own risk! Have a nice Feb 14. Regards! - mOhana

Rangoli: SivarAtri special

Here is a rangOli created with a linga. What prompted this is the sUrya-SaSAMka-vahni-nayanm in the SlOka. This linga has sun outside, moon inside and fire (light) at the centre. Normally I don't use five-fold symmetry as it is not amenable to translations (systematic movements in two directions). Today i am choosing five-fold symmetry as Siva is a paMchamukha (five-faced). I used the bilva leaves (kindly supplied by SrImati lakshmIdEvi and therefore all puNya to her Smile in between the lingas. AAt the centre I placed a nAgamalli (nAgaliMga) flower as there is a linga shape in this flower. I also used akunda flowers in the vacant spaces as this is supposed to be a favourite of the God Siva. The symmetry is not perfect due to the bilva leaves.
