when I did some croping for my profile picture I removed my husbands photo from it , now I could not relocate that. So I am uploading this with my cute little Neel( who is celebrating his Birthday today) and my dear DIL.
It is our culture that we ladies should wear this type of 9 yards saree on Thithi days and also on all religious functions esp, on Karthigai deepam day, Varamahalakshmi pooja day, Navarathri pooja, Karradayaan nonbu day , Sumangali Prarthanaa day ...etc.. Now that younger generations are not interested in these rituals, this custom is fading away.
I have enjoyed and admired the way this saree was worn elegantly by actress/actor SOWcar Janaki in the movie Edhir Neechal for the song " Aduththaathu Ambujaththai Paarthelaa" .

Madisar Rajamma maami u look very very dignified and elegant in this attire... Rajamma maam I love to wear a madisaar but as much as i tried searching the web and trying it out, the real essence is missing when i tried. I enjoyed wearing it during my wedding and then for my gruhapravesham. Many people believe younger generation are not interested in it, but frankly most of us are very much interested in knowing the culture and wearing it, only thing is we need proper guidance to do it and we will follow... Unfortunately, I dont hv a MIL or someone who can teach me this...
Many more happy returns to the handsome guy in this picture and regards to your lovely DIL, she is indeed lucky to have u as her MIL.

Wow Rajam - I love this pic. Seeing this I am reminded of the song "madisar kattindu vandhale maharasi" but that will end as "bambai maami" but you are "bangaluru maami" na?? I too love to wear madisar atleast once but no one to show me how. The colour of your DIL's saree is awesome.
Many happy returns of the day Neel kanna - hope you have a wonderful birthday with lots of surprises and goodies..

I am so happy that Neel kutty got all your wishes and blessings thru this cafe talk.
I will be too happy if all the members,( if no objection from the family members) can upload their photo. with their family. .In chennai meet and Bangalore meet I could meet so many relatives of Sudha, Lakshmi , Judy and Sumathi. Its more fun when family members also involve inour get togethers. and family functions. ( Rekha... can u start the trend by putting the RECENT REAL family photo of yours?).
Pushpa and Judy, anytime u visit me in Bangalore or Jaya in chennai we will fulfill ur wishes ! Ok. Thank u all for the nice comments.

Wo...w maam as rightly said by pushpa u look very dignified and elegant. When i saw ur profile picture i was wondering how come u wore sari in Guajarati style as the pallu comes from right shoulder. Now i understood the raaaj.wow this madisar style looks very elegant. We should request Lata to give some live demonstration of draping sari in madisar style(with the help of mannequin ).Yes, as u said rightly our customs and rituals are slowly fading .But maam do we are not responsible?.if we take time and give training about all these customs, definitely today’s generation will try to continue...for e.g. every college celebrate traditional day where our children try to put traditional dress we can take advantage of this kind of celebration to teach them .Neel DARLING, Many, many, many..............Happy returns of the day .Enjoy with your nani(dadi).Love and prayers to Neel

Rajjamma ,Yes, definitely .I will try to upload my family picture as soon as possible .Indeed It's a very good suggestion .Infact many a time when i was commenting on particular person’s work or the person I imagine the person look in particular way .But once u visualize the person then it will become as if two persons are communicating directly to each other .Right now I feel as if I am talking to u

Happy Birthday Neel....
Rajamma Mam it is very nice to see you in our traditional Madisar saree... you look so majestic in madisar saree. I too love to wear madisar saree on occasions. Even though my in in laws are no more, i luv to follow our traditions. An amazing fact about madisar is that the resent research says the possibilities of utress problem is less for those who regularly wear madisar. I always admire about Visaka Hari on stage for the way she wears madisar and do Kathakalachebam...

Great picture! I have a dharma sandEham
What is the reason for wearing this sari in different styles by different sects as one is the mirror image of the other? Is there any religious significance or is it just tradition?

By the way, happy birthday neel
Terminology wise, the way red sari is worn is a left-handed helix and the way the blue sari is worn is a right-handed helix.

Both Shiva?vishnu followers i.e Iyer and iyengar... they wear 9 yards saree with kachcham, but to differentiate they just put the pallu in the opposite way ,I think.

Rajamma mam, What u said is correct. I too use to wear this 9 yard sari for our festivals like kaarthigai, Thiruvathirai, Pongal and Kaaradaiyan nombu. Also for shraddham and sumangali prathanai. Eventhough I don't know to tie it neatly, I still tie it however it comes in order to keep up with tradition. For any family ceremonies like, marraige, seemandham, ayush homam, graha pravesam - my SIL will help me.

Rajamma mam,
I have also read in some web page about the importance of wearing madisar sari. I could not remember all but only a few.
One thing is that, when we tie madisar sari, we keep kachham in back. this works a good back support for our spine. During shradhham or any other family occasions, we use to work after wearing madisar and it will be hectic job. So this kachham will be a sort of comfort for us when u bend down and work.
Another thing which i came across is that (please don't laugh after reading this), during shraddham before the rituals are complete, if you go to wash room, then you are required to take bath for the second time, in order to continue take part in the rituals. This kachham which is passing in between the two legs (we call it madi), will prevent you from getting the feeling of urinating frequently (however now-a-days people are very flexible). It seems to withstand for 6 to 8 hours and by that time rituals will be over.
Am i right Rajamma mam?
