Ikolam Meet (An inspiration) - 4

The first photo is of an elderly maami who drew a freehand kolam in a fraction of a second (I would have taken hours to do this). She not only drew the kolam but as you see in the second photo encouraged another person to draw a kolam. She was very inspiring to us who not only shared her views and ideas with us but also was enthusiastic to learn from others as well. I was ashamed of myself cos she drew the kolam with such ease. This was something we would cherish. I remeber her telling us that she had many kolams and when we asked her to share them with us she gladly said that she will surely share it with us but also told us, "pls return back my kolam book to me after you share it with others" I am sure this is the obsession we all share with our kolam books and the love for kolams, I myself am so possesive of my kolam books that I dont like to give it to my sisters too, I would rather draw them out in a different book or paper and hand it over to them. Second photo she sings us a beautiful song with such a wonderful voice that needed no mike to sing. It was so good. Maam you were an inspiration to us. We loved every moment u spent with us. The thirs photo is the finished version of maami's kolam with a little touch color by our Ikolam members. A wonderful experience this was for me. Tx Lata for this wonderful experience.

Rightly said! People are possessive about their kolam notes! Even now Rajamma used to tell that I lost her precious kolam note 25 yrs back! I feel guilty!

Yes, she was the best part of the meet, though not in the agenda !
Her witty comments also kept us laughing. She was quite scandalised when Lakshmi demonstrated the "Neer mel kolam", saying it was such a waste of talcum powder! Nor would she agree that it was actually "on " water, as it had a base! It was a privilege to interact with her.
Since there's a new paper boy who flings the newspaper on my kolam, rubbing off parts of it, I have taken to putting my kolams rather late. Ajji was quite firm about putting kolams before ' 6.30 am' as, when Surya Bhagwan takes his bath and passes by, he will enter only houses that have their thresholds swpt, cleaned and decorated by a rangoli! So now I draw the kolam earlier and keep vigil to scold the paper boy!
