All present start chanting "Lalitha Sahasranamam" either as shlokam or as Naamavalli. we normally do it as naamavalli. After this you can even chant some of our Devi Sthothrams and have a small Bhajanai etc (individual choices). Once this is over the deeparadhana takes place with all the lights off(only the light of the camphor and the lamps will be there).

The main vilakku is lit and the ganapathy pooja is done to the top right lamp. You really feel the divine power once the lamp is lit...
The pooja is started and except for the main vilakku all other lamps are lit and the prasadams, flowers etc are ready..
After all the alangaarams the lamp is placed at the centre of the kalam along with other lamps. This type of poojas vary and it is done in different ways. Some people do it with three lamps some with five ...We normally do it in this way by having five lamps surrounding the main lamp in which one becomes Ganapathy at the time of pooja.
As the main pooja is conducted on the lamp (which becomes the Goddess after Aavaahanam) is decorated with Pattu paavaadai and flowers and placed on the kalam. This lamp was bought from Chennai only for the purpose of this pooja which is almost 3ft tall.

This is the finished kalam and the centre one is called as Ashta dalam(eight petals of Lotus).The square portion is the main kalam and the outer portions are decorated like a feather or like a peedam.
This shows the making of the Padmam or Kalam in which the lamp is placed and the pooja is performed.
