really great idea though i never tried to dot kolam(dotted). This time i may give a try

Lata's picture

Agreed! Great idea. I had read about this last year in the mylapore kids contest section (festival site) and had wanted to try it too, but never got to it. Let's get it started!
To keep it simple to begin with, could we try to make a kolam out of a 10x10 dotted one? I'll also post it separately where everyone could see, in the next couple of days. Smile

Dear Suges, I would like to know what message you get when you try to upload rangolis. I don't understand your problem completely when you say that you were not able to upload rangolis. Smile

I have created a 10x10 rangOli, but having problems in uploading. It is taking a long time attaching, but never finishes. I went back and tried two or three times, to no avail. The file is not big, just 165 kb. May be, I'll try tomorrow.

Lata maam please don't laugh .what u mean by 10x10.is it in the central line it contains 10 dots and total we will have 10 lines with reducing number of dots in each upper and lower line. Am i right? If no then please explain i want to try in paper at least one dotted kolam

Lata's picture

Hi Dr.Rekha,
There is nothing to laugh at here. I should've been more clear. Smile
Let me share one of my example rangolis with you:
http://www.ikolam.com/node/199
In the link given above, you'd see a butterfly rangoli which was made with 10 rows of dots laid horizontally, in 10 vertical rows. The dots are placed in a parallel arrangement, and then the design gets drawn over it. That's what we mean by 10x10 dotted rangoli. I'm sorry if you thought it was a 10 feet by 10 feet rangoli. At least this is the way I had always written and tagged kolams in this site.

I also use a maximum and a minimum range for most kolams (11x1, or 21x1), in which case we are just giving a general idea of how big or small the size is, and how many dots a rangoli has in its widest area (in these cases the middle part has the maximum number and it tapers to either side and ends in a smaller number like 1, in the example I had used here). Again, this is just to give a basic idea and certainly not the only way to express the dot count of rangolis. My way of writing dots originates from the way we used to ask or talk about kolam sizes. For example, while attempting a 21x1 kolam, we used to say we're making a "21 dotted kolam", hence referring to the maximum number of dots used in a line. Smile

Mahalakshmi, this isn't a contest so no stress. Smile

Great idea. When does this 10*10 contest starts?

Hi Lata,
Thank you very much for explaining in simplified ,detailed way to do the kolam for beginners like me .How is ur headache ?r u still suffering from migraine pain?

Lata's picture

Migraine is gone Doctor, it is the usual flu now, and I'm managing fine. Smile
But, I've a feeling I'll get the migraine back if you don't give out the answer to your riddle pretty soon. :0
