Good Handwriting

Dear I-Kolam members,

When I was in my school days, my friends would say that if anyone wanna improve their handwriting, then kolam is a good practise for that. What they mean is, if a person is good in making kolams and has a regualar practise of making kolams, their handwriting will be very neat and clean. Just wanted to know, how far this statement is true. Ofcourse, I too have improved my handwriting during my high school days.
Please share your thoughts on this subject. Let's see how many of us agree to this statement.

I'm not sure about the above saying.
My handwriting was good and had no complaints in my school days, ofcourse college days too. And drawing kolams on a regular basis was from my Class Eleven. Now that I'm more into the cyber world, writing by hand has shrunk to my grocery list Smile

Expecting for other member's view on the above topic.

Rao sir can answer ur query .Though my drawings and paintings are good my handwriting is worst probably i write very very fast. Someime I can't read my own handwriting .By practicing kolam we can improve the quality of kolam and not hand writing. Better to practice a lot by writing everyday with the help of four line books .I may be wrong

I too partially agree your statement Maha!!!! But nowadays I can make a perfect kolam but writing one page with neat handwriting is very difficult for me. My handwriting was too good in my school days.

Handwriting basically depends on how children were taught to write during their childhood. That means, parents and teachers have a very big role to play in this aspect. It depends lot on patience and diligence and using the proper tools. In the case of English, the three line copy book helps quite a bit. Cursive writing and right sloping letters look beautiful in English. In India, somehow most people write English in straight and vertical fashion. As for the Indian languages, once again a lot depends on the parents and teachers. These scripts are more complicated and straight and vertical letters look pleasing here. rangavalli and kOlam are learned later than the writing. By this time already the handwriting has taken its shape. So the two habits may not correlate. But even here practice can make it look better. No time is too young to develop good habits. Unfortunately, we use computers more often and so to some extent the art of writing on paper is lost gradually. During my college days in India in the fifties and sixties, paper was expensive and so I used to practice proofs and derivations, etc. on slate and slate pencil (halige, balapa Smile and all my earlier drafts of thesis were written behind computer outputs. But nowadays, people waste lot of paper, particularly here in the US.

Thanks for all of you for commenting on ths subject. So this mean, practising kolam does not have any direct impact on improving hand writing.

Younger days my handwriting was ok, but due to the influence and guidance of my Thamizh teacher I improved it a lot.( Same way I used to draw kolam, but due to so many peoples influence and guidence I improved in that art also). So attidude and practice play an important role in everything.) In my family all of us have good handwriting. Lettering writing was an interesting hobby for us till email took over.

I too agree with JKM sir. I started writing kolams after 12 years (may be after 7th std). But my hand writing was too good in school days. I was studying in kannada medium, and every day our sir used to give home work of writing one page kannada and one page english. Next day he used to give "V.V.Good" for the best handwriting. Here I would like to remember one of my class mate T.V.Srinivas. Everyday we used to compete each other to get that "Very Very Good" on our page. In that way both of us handwriting was too good and both used to get the grade.

Now also my handwriting both (kannada and english) is good. Some times when i write in a hurry it will be OK kind. Since I work in Govt. Office, I am uised to files and I have write lot in files. Soooooo now also my handwriting is good.

Kolams may improve our concentration, patience, imagination and creativity. But I dont think it has influence on our Handwriting. It may help writing geometrical shapes like circle, polygons etc symmetrically without scale, protractor, compass etc.
