Uma, why not try to get completely immersed in the Sikkim culture just for a few days, while touring. We get our south indian food all year long everywhere in India. I'm sure there are Sikkim specialities for the vegetarians and the non-vegetarians. Try to read up on it before you visit, it looks interesting.
Have a wonderful trip, and if possible share your experiences with us when you get back. Smile

Hi Uma,
Some questions for you:
Where are you going exactly in SIkkim? South or North?
How many days stay there?
I will try to give you some info depending on your answers.
How are you reaching Sikkim from Kolkata (by air / by road?)

Uma, You will be aware of the climate over Sikkim in this season, i think. Take heavy woolen clothes to protect you and the kids from the severe winter. If you are guided by a travel agent, they will take care of your permits which you should avail to reach some places in north Sikkim. You get good vegetarian food (Veg. momos, noodles, fried rice, even idly and dosas) over there. You must taste momos there. Really yummy.
5 hrs is very less time to go for shopping in Kolkata because you need atleast one and half hour (one way) to reach a market place from airport and and the Howrah station. So you will be having hardly 2 to 3 hrs for shopping. Gariahat is a good place for shopping all variety of textiles (for kids as well as for elders) and you have a big Haldiram mall near Gariahat. Even New market near Esplanade is also good for shopping. You get good quality of sweets even in small shops (or big ones like KC Doss, Ganguram, Gupta Bros etc).
