This is beautifully drawn and the use of red colored kaavi enhances the look even further.
Going by the date you've mentioned, I think what you mean is that you made this for the start of Onam. Onam is different from the Malayalam new year - Vishu, which falls around the same time frame as the Tamil new year. :)
