Neelakamals
I was not keen at first to attend the meet, because, reclusive by nature, I take time to make friends, and to go to a party where I knew no one at all went against the grain.Calls to Padma, in response to her emails, went unanswered, so I thought, Good, I'll just let it go.
A call from Prema started the slow change. The enthusiasm in her voice, the friendliness, as though she had known me for years, and the anticipation, like a small child looking forward to the father's return from office with a chocolate in hand, made me think, " There may be something in this, after all."
Then I continued calling up Padma, finally got to her, we made the plans to meet, and to go together. My husband was surprised..." What will you do the whole day?" he asked, and honestly, I had no answer. But since it is very rarely that I make decisions like this, he let it go at that.
Prema was the first to reach the meeting point, and her husband who had driven all the way from Sahakar Nagar to drop her was waiting. He was very suuportive, and wished us a Happy Ladies' Day Out. He did not know about Anirudh, then, I guess!
We were the first to reach, well almost, as the Indira Nagar Family was also scouting on the bylanes...but we reached the tiny lift first, so were transported to the venue first. Ramya, Sowmya, their mother Rama and Ramya's mother in law Ganga came after us. Lakshmi, Sudha their husband's and other family members introduced themselves, and we were made to feel at home. Sudha the organiser, was quieter than Lakshmi, and it was a pleasant surprise to see all the family members in blue! Very supportive, very encouraging!
When Rajamma madam breezed in, I thought, " She's going to be the life of the party!" In a minute she had made us feel as though we had been friends all along, and with her laughter and comments, enlivened the room! Others came in later, I do not remember the order now, but in no time everyone was chatting twelve to a dozen.... I mentioned that Rajamma mada had 'breezed' in...I must mention the little whirlwind too( pun intended!) Vidhya made the whole apartment come alive! Her walk, talk, etc reminded me of my friend Jayanthi from my teaching days in Meenakshi College, Chennai. The same infectious laughter, the same lively chatter.....
Shall continue this later as the power has gone off!

Usha, your narration shows that you are a good story writter.you could express your feelings so nicely in a few words. Thank God , finally you decided to attend the meet! The moment I entered the home I was thrilled to see so many blue beauties waiting for others to come.Since I was familiar with Sudha,( with her frequent phone calls and emails) and Lakshmi and her family( we met in chennai twice and chat often,) I felt very much at home and started guessing who is who!.Whether laughing, chatting, smilling or simply admiring all of us fully involved in the proceeding thru out. ( Naalu per aarppaattam panninaalum adhai rasikka 4 per vendaamaa?)I was also equelly impressed by Vidhya's enthu! She resembles somebody close to me .. I am yet to get the link. Indhu looking calm and quiet but concentrated on everything and showed all her art work and kolam drawings.( I remembered Sumathi) Other 3 'R' s were very quietly enjoying. Padma and Anirudh surprised us with their singing.I have to admit that all are much more talented in other fields also.Sudha and Lakshmi have lovely sons who took care of all the guests with utmost care.
I am sure all chennai birds will be thinking of joining Bangaluru meet in the future! ( Hai Naa Judy?)

Usha maam I am glad you came. My feelings were the same when I was in two minds whether to go or not. Thank God I made the right decision, otherwise I would have missed out on such a wonderful experience.

(Taken up from where I left!)
Anirudh: Had wondered if it would be a guy, or a lady using her son's name as her id( Can hear Vidhya asking," Why son, why not husband?"....Because, that's usually a younger guy's name, and younger wives would not lose their own identity, would they? Even if it is Dibutn!). Pushpa, bwtter known to you all as dibutn, asked the question that was in most of our minds, about how he got interested in kolams, a 99.99% women -oriented theme. He explained about how his mother, aunt, and later grandmother , in order to keep him out of mischief( and out of their kolams) used to give him some kola podi when they were busy with their kolams...and so the interest developed. A very nice and unassuming boy, extremely courteous and talented, for those of you with eligible daughters!
Indumathi ma'am, as has been pointed out, kolame karumamaga, karuthaga irundhargal. Her crochet like kolam on a steel plate innum kan mun nirkiradhu. She had come with a big bag, a complete kit for the dispalay of her talents....from kola podi to kuthu vilakku!
Padma's song was lively...though about advice given to a girl by her mother to keep a safe distance from guys, Anirudh appreciated it as much as we did! Reminded me of the old Cliff Richard number "Bachelor Boy" . Later Padma told me that the original was like the Cliff Richard version, but the one she sang had been changed to suit women.
Jayanthi generously brought her Journal, with so many different kinds of art work( oh, I mever got round to see Indumathi Ma'am's kolam book), and also showed us one of the ways to make a greeting card; Lakshmi simultaneously displayed her talent: neer mel and neer keezh kolams.
The best was yet to come!
After the refreshing breeze and the little whirlwind, came the Tsunami, that toppled us all off our comfortable seats! I am still not sure whose athai or mami she was , but Smt. Lakshmamma Lakshman Rao was just out of this world. Her free hand kolam will be put up for you all to see, but what about her KBS voice and song that just enthralled us? Her wit and wisdom have been missed by all of you. Hope you make her a Special Guest in the next meet, Sudha!
I cannot end this without a special mention of the men in the family, the teenagers Pawan and Vivek and the kutties running about and showing more interest in what was going on! The elder women of the family were also very friendly and helpful. The lunch was fab! A fussy eater( you won't believe that , I know!), I had decided I'd just gobble a little curd rice, provided it hadn't been garnished with onions, but there was no excuse for me to refuse anything.
An excellent arrangement, Sudha and Lakshmi, and thank you Lata, for setting the ball rolling.
Lata, I have kept my word about writing about this meet! If it has become too long or boring, well, you asked for it, remember?!

Yes, I remember, and never forgot, and that's how I contacted you, in the first place. I'm glad you wrote us your experience, and then some more. I've read one poem, and am yet to read the other post. So, more, later.
