How does this poll work? I don't seem to be able to vote.

My apologies. You should be able to view the polls as well as register your vote.

Mani sir, It is difficult to choose as we know so many lanuages for example a member may be knowing hindi, english, tamil, telugu and kannada and also feeling very difficult to choose for rangoli, padikolam and chikukolam as all of them are my favourites. With a great pain i have voted for rangoli.

jayamohan's picture

Sudha, Maniji asks only your 'mother tongue' in the first one. Second one is really difficult to choose, as you say!

We were having a discussion about Tamilians and Kannadigas, and their preferences. My observation is that there are more Kannadigas, and so there is more interest (for them)in Rangavalli, than chiku kolams. Whereas, for tamilians, the first preference is dotted kolams and padi kolams (depending on other criteria, that I'm not willing to get into, unless there is a need). We are taking a look at the response of our members, their commenting frequency (and the people they leave comments for), and deriving some conclusions. Sometimes, it leads to an argumentative conversation too. Anyways, the polls will speak for themselves, and based on more polls and observations, we will decide about ikolam's fate/future. Smile

it was really tough to select between Rangoli, chikku kolam and padi kolam...though i have voted...but i would surely like to give my preference in this order (coz i really like all of them) 1. Padi Kolam, 2. Chikku Kolam, 3. Rangoli...hope this helps...

Hey, all of you...What is the difficulty in telling your Mother tongue? Nothing wrong in telling what you like most in the three category.Pulli/ chikku kolam is like a cotton saree ( elegant, comfortable for daily use and suitable for all age), Padikolam is like a silk saree( suitable for pooja and functions giving sacred feeling ) and the Rangoli is like the designer saree( costly, attractive and can be used only for festivals and Parties). Mani Sir is just conducting this to know the taste of ikolam members.( Lata, which category u want to win so that u can put up your application to recharge your wardrobe)!

Mani Sir one small doubt, why computer kolams and poo kolams are left behind?

I left out the computer and poo kalams since they are not practiced that regularly as compared to the other types.

The original idea behind these two polls, which need to be taken together, is to find a correlation between region/language and the type of kolam/rangoli practiced.

It used to be true that you could blindly assume that all people from Tamilnadu spoke Tamil, all from Karnataka spoke Kannada, so on and so forth. That's definitely not true anymore.

Similarly, I used to assume that dotted/kambi/neli/chiku kolam is a Tamil thing while colorful rangoli is practiced outside Tamilnadu. This is not true too.

In lot of senses, I am still stuck in 1980 and refuse to grow beyond that (at least when it comes to things Indian!). I wanted to run this poll to see how far off I am with reality.

Lata's picture

Jayashree, that will do. thanks.

Rajam, I like your correlation between kolams and sarees. The polls are about basic preferences for everyday (often), and do not take into account the occasional ones. My closet is just one among many. I am thinking of everybody's wardrobe. Smile

Mohanaji, a good ballet performance by your tongue! We hope you never bite it. Smile

jkmrao's picture

I bite my tongue only when somebody curses me. You see, I am so good, nobody curses me Smile

Though my mother tongue is Telugu, my vote goes for Tamil.I like rangoli, and padikolam than pullikolam.

Lata's picture

Your mother tongue is Telugu? I'm surprised. Your have an eloquent writing style in Tamil, and I had assumed you were a tamilian. I'm ashamed to call myself a tamilian. Sad

sailaja.s's picture

mohana garu i really liked your tongue concept. as u said tongues father is brain and mother is heart,it is nice concept and now i am wondering who is that relative responsible when the tongue rolls out without thinking and feeling.?

subashini's picture

Though my mother tongue is Telugu, I can't read or write Telugu fluently.our native place is Tamilnadu.so we assumed that we are Tamilians.I proudly to say I got post graduate degree in Tamil literature.

Lata's picture

No wonder! I told you so Mani. She is a tamil professor allright! Smile

subashini's picture

no, no still I am a student in all matters.I just said that for information purpose only.In fact, I can speak, write and read only Tamil language without mistake.
