Tiruvaiyaru

My clan is originally from Thanjavur, and I have some relatives who have settled there. During our winter vacation in India, we had visited Tiruvaiyaru ( close to Thanjavur), which is the place where the great musician Saint Tyagaraja lived.

Here in Tiruvaiyaru every year in January, Thyagaraja Aradhana is held where musicians from all over the country participate. It was inspiring to watch both the young and the young at heart sing with great enthusiasm. My daughter Aarushi (not seen in the picture shown) considered herself lucky to be able to sing a song there, a day before the main event of Pancharatna Kritis was held (January 5) 2010.

There is also a picture taken at the Brihadeeswara Temple, in Thanjavur, of an australian performing a piece from the Bharathnatyam.

aarushijI is lucky! I have seen a lot of photographs of tiruvayyaru and tyAgarAja temple in the flickr. One of my friends is releasing a book on tyAgarAja soon. He visited all the places associated with tyAgarAja including tiruvayyAru and the sarasvatI mahal library in taMjAvUru and collected lots of facts and sieved the facts from the fiction. He even has a xerox copy of the only known signature of tyAgarAja! He is in your neck of woods, latAjI Smile

You should visit during the Margazhi month, Lakshmi, mainly to see your favorite singer perform. Ofcourse, the famous singers perform all over the globe. Smile

Mohanaji, in order to sieve facts from fiction, one has to work extra hard to get access to certain places, specifically those places that are forbidden for the general public. We'll try to catch a glimpse of that book your friend is releasing. Most of the times, we are so caught up in our daily lives, that we (my family) don't know much about what goes on in our neck of the woods. Smile

Sumathi, indians who raise their kids in foreign countries, miss all the things that were readily available to them, when they were growing up, and try to provide some parts of it in bits and pieces to their kids. In my opinion, and from what I've seen from visiting some people in India, I've come to the conclusion that more people in India tend to take some of our classical music/dance for granted. Take the Brahadeeswara temple for example. During the Margazhi season, there are more US performing artists who perform there, verses indians living around Thanjavur. Some of my own relatives who have settled in Thanjavur (for about 3 decades) visited Tiruvayyaru for the first time, along with us. And, some of our relatives also think that we (my daughter) are weird. A couple of people have told us that we are old fashioned and not modern enough. And here is one comment I hear over and over again, which is meant for me; "you wouldn't have thought about starting something like ikolam, if you lived in India". I think they are right. Smile

That's nice to hear. Congrats Aarushiji. I miss all these fun here. I think most of the big cities here in US conduct aaradhana. I don't know how good it would be. But atleast they r conducting. That's good.
