About Hexagonal paDikOlam - 7 : PRINT

Sri Aniruddha was asking for marigolds. This one has chrysanthemums instead. It has a hexagonal steps, tear shapes and their mirror images (six inside and twelve outside), a central red coloured circle with twelve little circles around, crescent moons, six lamps and six flowers. Six and twelve are important numbers in the Hindu mythology. I'll leave it to the viewers give their significance. Regards! - mOhana

Ask and you're given! Here comes an obvious thought; beautiful shapes - each one of them. Smile

I like the tiny hollow dot at the pointed end of the tear shapes, and the color of the same. The center circle pulls everything together.

Hmm...now what can I ask for? I'll let you know in a few days.

Sixfol symmetry is my favourite also.( all my morning raagas are 6 fold , with inbetween dots)
Here the 6 to 12 expansion is very well done and in this art , mOhanaji, you are an expert.

Beautiful kolam, center part looks very nice.In the Hindu mythology number 6 signficance--shadruchis,(6 tasts), shanmukha(six faces of siva)(karthikeya).number 12:- (1)Aditi is the great goddess who gave birth to the twelve zodiacal (rashis), (2) 12 months in a year.my thought goes up to this.It is pleasure to know more details about this.

SIX SIGNIFICANCE OF A SUMANGALI 1- SINDHOOR , 2- KUMKUM , 3 - FLOWERS, 4 - BANGLE , 5 - MANGALSUTRA OR THALI ,6- KALUNGURA ( silver ring worn on the finger next to the toe) sIR PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT THIS ALSO COMES UNDER THE SIX SIGNIFICANCE.

jkmrao's picture

I think sumaMgali is recognised by five characteristics - turmeric, kuMkuma (at the partition of the hair), glass or earthen bangles (not gold), earrings and maMgaLasUtra. That is why she is called muttaiduva (an older lady with five colours or the above characteristics). The state of marital bliss is therefore called aiduvatanam (or five colours). Of course, governed by the laws made by man, all the above vanish once her man is no more. Six and twelve or more mythological. In ancient India, the numbers, say in an year, are not mentioned directly, but by a characteristic that the number signifies. Let us say we want to represent 1943. It is given as eye (Siva has three eyes), sea (four seas), planet (nine in number), sun or moon (one). Unlike in our present system, it is written as 3491. In that sense six stands for season, taste, etc. and twelve for sun (there are twelve suns).
