Sunflower seed arrangement
I am always fascinated by the arrangement of sunflower seeds. Here it is recreated by me. This is a good example of the so-called Fibonacci series, originally discovered by virahAnka in the sixth century, gOpala and hEmachandra in ChandaSSAtra (see my blogposts). The virahAnka numbers are - 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, etc. The sunflower seeds are supposed to have the logarithmic spirals 21 and 34. I took these two and formed a figure of heart (similar to the one in hRdayakamalam) and rotated it by 137 degrees 21 times to join with the original starting figure. 137.56 degrees is the angle of rotation to get maximum exposure for sunlight between neighboring leaves, etc. In fact, this has been recently used to develop solar panels too. At the points of intersection of this 21 hRdayakamalam, I placed circles of various sizes to get this picture. Enjoy!
