I bought a Dhrishti face mask in my last trip to India, not to hang it outside of my house, but to show it to my kids and explain why they saw that in almost everyone's house in India. My grandma has one hanging on every entrance and exit doors.
Honestly, I don't think our elders were wrong completely in their beliefs. Sometimes, I'm confused about this "dhristi" beliefs, and other times, I call it a superstition. I actually ended up doing the "arthi" style of dhristi, for my daughter, when I first moved out of India. I used to get the "what if" kind of questions a lot back then. Apart from the weddings, and the important occasions, do people still practice the "dhristi ritual" on a weekly basis?

Yes Lata! Sometimes little babies cry for no reason. Immediately my mother would bring few red chillies and salt in her closed palms, make the baby and mother sit and 'suthufy' them around their head and put them on fire to crack! The child also would become calm!
May be psycological but no harm in trying!

Also, in South India some caterers/event managers arrange to do this for the couple and their families on the next day of marriage, before vacating the hall!

People do that dhrishti for the kids almost every week even here in US. Particularly all south indian families. I know some of my friends when there kids were babies like upto 1 year everyday they will do this dhristi. I think it has some effect. i did for my son and I'm waiting to do this to my 2nd baby happily.
