Basic Design for Sankar Bharathi kolams for compeitions

I saw number of sankar bharathi kolams in the recently held "Rangarang Rangoli Utsav' at Bangalore. Can any one teach me or give tips about -
how to draw basic design of such kolams, when we draw huge kolams. How to maintain symmetry and even spacing.

I wanted to watch during the contest but I could not. Friends help me regarding this.

Padma, long back when I went to poona for some function, I saw people drawing this SB kolams on the road effortlessly. In no time big big rangolis were created. One person used to draw the circles with thread( Indhu madam had done it in our Bangalore meet)Another person spreading different colours in each circle with the help of filters and few more people drawing designer outer lines where two circles meet. I admired the swift action in creating this SB rangolis.
But I got shocked or rather frightened to see the amount of color and kolapodi they were using. Me, being a Kanjoos in using color/and white podi, I decided this is not my cup of tea. So never tried this art. But in North India it is very famous.
I am not able to give the tips, some experts of ikolam will help you I think.

rajammaji you have pretty much covered the details.
normally they use sieve (jaraDi), thread to ensure perfect circles are drawn. for small circles, fill the jaraDi with color and just tap on the ground, faster filling Smile ....and funnel to draw thik lines. if they are drawing lines by hand then they dont do like us using two fingers, they take powder in all five fingers & draw-check 2nd video

Thank you Rajamma and Anirudh. Even I have watched many video's where multiple people work for SB. But all videos start from colouring and drawing done prior.
My doubt is when only one makes SB kolams, how to draw big circles with thread, bcoz, somebody has to hold the other end. Is it possible by only one person? I have to try drawing only circles at home, with the help of thread.

Yes Rajam, even I got shocked, by the amount of powder they use. They will be holding big packets of powder and white powder also, they just pour using all 5 fingers. May be one must have excellent drawing skills as the drawing may not be modified later.

And Majority are men who draw these SB kolams in a very short time. Anirudh, collar up please!!!!!!

Here in Mumbai and Thane no festival or function is celebrated without a SB rangoli design. Unfortunately the people who draw this professionally don't conduct regular classes. They conduct a one day work shop just before some festivals like diwali Ugaadi etc. One way of doing...Normally to do more circles you can take a pvc pipe of 1/2 inch thickness. Make a hole at the bottom first and cover and then make holes at regular intervals for different radius. Put a nail or stick at the bottom hole. Now fill the tube with normal white powder and place the nail at a place and start rotating. You will see circles with different radius. As you said SB rangoli is full of vibrant colours and people buy them in kilos during festivals. Wink Smile Smile

wow..thats super idea somya ma'm.
hehe....sure Padma ma'm
so one more idea to ease your job, if you dont have any one to help to hold the thread in center, then tie the thread to a stone/or any heavy object & keep at the center. Ensure that the knot comes on the top of the stone so that you can easily move round with the thread to draw and the size of the circle depends on the the length of the thread.
