On a typical day, how many kolams/rangolis do you see in your street.

In our neighborhood, the only "kolam" that we get to see are the kids' artwork done with chalk on the driveway and the walkway. Almost all of the Indians who've settled here follow the practice of making kolams only during festival days.

When I visit USA(KANSAS), Iwent out for search of house to buy for my son. Whenever i say wow big frontyard ,nice to put big kolam my son used to make fun of me. Why what is the wrong in putting kolam in summer there?(Lata laughing?)

Lata's picture

I agree with you Viji madam, there is no problem in making kolams in this season, no trouble at all. I guess living here all these years, has made me sort of adapt in a certain way, that I too tend to make kolams only for special occasions. Smile

Purni, you said it right, I think we make kolams more for us and our family's sake, no matter where we live.

Judy, the point you made about "Jeans" was funny, reminded me of my daughter's comment a few days back. She asked me; how come I don't like to make vadas for selling in a restaurant? She wants me to make idlis, molagapodi, vada and chutney, and sell them in our local Farmer's market and to restaurants. I can't stop laughing whenever I think of that comment.

judelined's picture

Viji remember the song 'Vaarai en thozhi' from the movie Jeans'?? Actress Lakshmi will put a big kolam on the street - you also can try once - I am sure you will have an audience to clap for you once you are done Smile

Since I am a 'Kolapaithyam' wherever I walk I have eyes only to see each and every doorstep that is on the street - I am always on the look out for something new and different.. Everyday I see a minimum of 20 kolams (i.e., on the way to the provision cum veg shop from my house) - on days I venture to stray further to the market or some place like that I get to see as many as about 50 to 60 kolams (no jokes - I once counted 58 kolams), but believe it or not most of them are the regular star or small flower kolams - very rarely do I get to see something different... There is this usual set of small kolams that everyone prefers to put everyday instead of breaking their head to think of something new. Margazhi is the only month that everyone tries to dig up their old kolam books to dish out 30 odd kolams.. When we first shifted to our own house way back in 1991 there were only about 6 to 7 houses close by and the opposite house had three girls, each of whom used to draw lovely kolams in their own styles. Come Margazhi they used to compete with me to see whose kolam was bigger and better (we used to put the kolam in the night itself). It was real fun because whoever finished first would go up to the other's house to see them complete their piece of art.. Since I had a bigger collection in my book they always used to borrow my book (and almost lost it once - I nearly had a heart attack) to put new kolams.. One by one the girls got married and left and thereafter there was no one to compete with so I too lost interest and used to be satisfied just putting the usual kolams.. Now ikolam has rekindled that fire in me and I am eager to create new kolams everyday.. Thanks to Lata and group for pressing the refresh button in me Smile

Purni's picture

Nice discussion going on, I suppose......

Judy ma'am you are lucky you get to see kolams everyday.......

Here in Bangalore its very very hard to find a street flashing with kolams, these days...... initially in Koramangala, where I started my kolams, you would get to see all types of kolams.....dotted, freehand, kuzhal, double strokes, padikolams and many more..... Mine was always chalk kolam as my house owner wud never mind stepping on my work.... seeing me use chalks, two more ladies started their routine with little flowers....altogether making the total of houses with kolam to 10 where the total number of houses in the street was 50 or above...... normally the people who like kolams wud hv a painted rangoli in their courtyard.... so we cant find new designs every now and then..... but I too have my eyes on the kolams that can be seen here and there..... while we go for walking and all, I wud suddenly stop and start counting the dots... my family wud b thinking i am with them, but when they realise they r talking to themselves, they too wud wonder what happened...... now here in Electronic City, the number of houses with kolam is decreased to 5.... which is including mine.... that too my kolam could be seen only by the people who wud visit my house, as it is on the first floor..... every morning when I start cleaning n making kolams, I always face the laughs of the people living here...... they say I waste my time..... I laugh to myself that they dont know there are more people here in Ikolam, who know to value such an art...... most of all, my kid loves my kolams... he wud b the first one to give a comment.....

In our village, it is a ritual to put kolams... You could see everyone making KOlams as their start of the day..... next time when I go there, I would make sure to get a whole lot of pictures to be shared.....

radpri's picture

judelined's picture

Yes Purni I am indeed lucky to see lots of kolams everyday - something which is close to my heart...

Lata you never know your idli, molagapodi, vada, chutney might actually click and who knows you may even become the famous 'idli maami' of your area.. Jokes apart, try it out once and see na??

Lata's picture

Thanks for the motivation Judy, I might do that one of these days, right next to Diya's lemonade stand.
No Mani, you can't say no anymore. See, I now have supporters. Smile

judelined's picture

Way to go Lata - I will stand in front and hold that flag nice and high for you....

Lata's picture

Have you had any experience using colored salt for coloring your rangolis? If so, please share how you go about mixing colors in the salt (sea salt which has a coarser texture). I'll upload a rangoli picture that I've had for some years.

viji_j86's picture

Lata I too had have the idea (Vada chatini) when i visited Niagara falls. After rounded fully and felt tired i felt like eating something and i am not able to get something which is of my taste. So i suggested my son that if he permits me i am ready to put one stall preparing vada bonda and milka bajji like our Chennai beach.
viji

Lata's picture

Viji madam, I've heard what you said from my friends' mom and dads too. They don't like the "American" snacks, and look for something Indian. Smile
This is the reason, why our ladies spend so much time making all those murukkus/pakodas and take so much time to get ready for any sightseeing trip. Did you notice, that the non-indian people travel without much of food items? Smile

Lata's picture

So, how come we all talk about starting something like that, but we don't? Smile

rajamma_2's picture

In our flat I see one or two kolams daily. And this helps me to locate SouthIndian families. But on festival day we see different kind of decorations in front of all, houses. ours is a mini India with all state people living here.(around 600 flats in this complex). Last week I visited a nearby Venkateshvara temple and stunned to see big big painted rangolis inside the temple. If possible I'll take photos and share with u all.

viji_j86's picture

Rajamma Madam did you noticed the very very big kolam drawn at Thiruvannamalai Temple. All around the very bif pragaram. Very very big colour painted kolams. Looks very nice. Nearby ladies had done it I suppose. Likewise mostly in all southIndian famouse temples Kolams are drawn in white paint and colour paints. Looks very nice. While doing prayers I will not forget to enjoy the kolams too.
viji

jayamohan's picture

When I go for morning walk I see a minimum of 10 kolams, most of them stars and suzhis done in a hurry!2 or 3 houses have small but unique ones which make me stop and have a look again.
Viji, there were some stunning big padikolams in 'Naellaiappar temple' in Tirunelveli.
Since cameras were banned inside, I could not capture them!

rajamma_2's picture

Lata madam, indha pakkamaa vandhaakka naama ellaaruma avangalai indha koilunkalukku ittukinu polaamaa? kolam paakka?

Lata's picture

Enna madam enna poi madam-nnu address pnringa! Smile
A student can address the professor Madam or Sir, but not the other way around madam. Smile
I would very much like to go on a trip to some temple with all of you. Great idea.

judelined's picture

They why not plan up something Lata - would sure be fun to go on some kolamting (i meant outing) together...

Lata's picture

Sure Judy, that would be nice, we'll try to plan for it when the time comes for a visit. Smile
But, in the meantime, how about you ladies getting together often. Say, a monthly lunch in a restaurant, once in a while potluck, or something like that? Smile

judelined's picture

I'd love that Lata - actually just see my comment on brindha's kolam today - I have already hinted for a meet before Brindha leaves Chennai for Kolkotta... Hope to receive some positive response...

Lata's picture

That's good planning. Have fun ladies. Smile

judelined's picture

Hope I get some responses by tomorrow...

Here i want to share one "bad lady" habit...
Next to my house one girl used to draw big big beautiful koalm. Every day some people or single person Appreciating her kolam so she is expressing her happiness, kolam beauty... with me but her aunty very very jalousie lady she don’t know how to put at least one single dot in kolam. So lady starts put water and erasing her lovely kolam every day not fully only half (not exact half)kolam. One day girl asked her “why are you doing like this” lady said “you don’t want to get appreciate from any body that’s y I am erasing half kolam only”. So that girl starts crying every day but she didn’t stopped to put kolam every day because girl mother said “kolam is important before going out any body from home to outside, that is good & wishes for best” and also she said “I am expecting my family members not get any problems and they want to be happy always including that lady” ….
Here I am help less pls tell me or suggest me what to do for that lady comes good track…

Lata's picture

Radha, if I were that girl, I would just call the police and file a complaint for harrassment. Smile

judelined's picture

Lata that is not possible here in India unlike abroad where public disturbance is treated as a serious crime - I know of a case where a man was arrested for snoring (he must have had speakers through an amplifier on as he was so very loud it seems) in bed..

Lata's picture

Ok then, how about pepper spray? Easy, cheap, get the job done in a flash! Smile

judelined's picture

hahaha I can imagine that lady screaming and sneezing her head off.......

radpri's picture

Girl tried to give complaint(not only kolam reasons and also various personal resons)
but police man said "These all silly resons we cannt handle this cases" and "This your family problem, better you dont put kolam stop it.."

radpri's picture

And I suggested to girl “put kolam in front of my house no body erased it”
But “MY and HER bad luck not possible ..because we don’t have specious place very small (first floor house)” and “Festival time she ll put small & good kolam in frount of my house” and she is happy…

Lata's picture

That's very thoughtful of you to offer your place Radha! Smile

judelined's picture

See I told you Lata - no use of complaining in India - it is only best to find a way out and Radha has given a wonderful idea - so sweet of you dear...

judelined's picture

Actually on Aug 15 my nephew went with his friends to a beach resort and two of his friends went into the beach for a swim. Before they knew what happened a big wave came and took them in.. Some visitors from the neighbouring resort saved one boy but the other one drowned - all because there was no life-guard in this resort... The dead boy's parents tried to file a case against the resort but you know what the police did -they took a bribe from the resort owner to let them go scot free.. and you know how much they took - 5 lakhs.... Sick!! So for major crimes itself when there is no rescue, just imagine the plight of Radha's neighbour Sad

radpri's picture

Correct judy madam...In India 70% of police took some bribe closed the files, they ll finding works only where & which cases bribe ll come... and they ll never concentrate on files or work or probelms of public ...

Lata's picture

That is so sad Judy.

I agree with you Radha. I wanted to narrate an incident that happened with me and Mani in Delhi. We had just shifted to Delhi the week after our marriage, to our new rented apartment, in East Delhi. Since we were new to the area, we were not much aware of the local park closing timings. And, so we ended up sort of stuck in one of them around 8:30pm or so, after strolling through the different parts of the area (can't remember the time, but it was quite dark). We arrived at the main gate, and there were two policemen looking at us suspiciously. They started questioning us, and would not believe me, when I showed my Thaali, to prove it to them, that we were indeed married! I still remember the look on my husband's face, when he couldn't digest what the policemen implied! Anyway, I was hell bent on inviting the gentlemen over to our house for a cup of coffee, just to prove that I wasn't some wayward girl whiling my time away from home, in a park. Smile

Nice Topic on the go, Lataji & Judy ma'am.....

Bribe is everywhere these days.... Police Department is just a part of it.... Total Government is infected by this disease.... We can say almost all of the Government Employees are suffering with this sickness as it is visible.... But there is more to be seen.... Do U know how A simple Person becomes a Government Employee?... The Government Jobs go under the hammer.... Every Post has a rate tag fixed to it.... "Pay the price and Take the place" is the rule.... We paid 5lacs for my BIL's job in Agricultural Dept..... that too for a post which he got the Interview Card.....Teaching Jobs would cost you about 7 to 12lacs.... Recommendation is required for every move and every move is made with an exchange of money...... As said in SIVAJI- Deivathula irunthu kadaisi moonjoor varaikkum Kodi-la irunthu thengaai moodi varaikkum vache aaganum....... Swine Flu is nowhere match when compared to the biggest disease of all, BRIBERY..... The Scariest Part is that this is not gonna end so soon.....

Hope You all watched RANG DE BASANTHI....One of my Favourite Movies..... The Theme of the Movie is one of the most admirable thoughts..."With so may things going around, we just have two options left, to deal with a problem....You can just stay calm and patient as long as you can and bear the consequences... or You may take the responsibility to (change)solve it".....

Am Happy You chose the second option, Radhaji...... Hats Off to You....

Being a Good Citizen should start from HOME, I suppose...Our Elders gave us an Independent India...... Now it is our responsibility to give our Children a Safe India...... Let's Just Hope for the Best.....
