International Children's Book Day
International Children's Book Day is celebrated on Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, on 2nd April. Every other year International Board on Books for Young people presents the Hans Christian Andersen Awards to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature.
The Hans Christian Andersen Award is the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books.
The recipients are selected by a distinguished international jury of children's literature specialists.
IBBY Announces the Short List for the 2012 Hans Christian Andersen Awards.
The five short-listed authors in alphabetical order are:
María Teresa Andruetto (Argentina)
Paul Fleischman (USA)
Bart Moeyaert (Belgium)

Bianca Pitzorno (Italy).
The five short-listed illustrators in alphabetical order are:

In honor of ICBD, schools and public libraries organize special activities throughout the week.
What are some of your favorite books that you read, as a child? Or, for those of you who are still a child at heart, what are some of your favorite books?

I loved reading Noddy (still do) especially for the cute kutti poems in it. I also loved reading Tinkle (suppandi my favorite character and Nasruddin Hodja), Tin Tin (cute looking dog), Phantom (had a huge crush on this character
), Mythological stories. A great fan of Nancy Drew stories (author Carolyn Keene), Famous Five (author Enid Blyton), Secret Seven (Enid Blyton)), Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, and not to forget Alfred Hitchcock stories.

I also loved reading Spiderman and Mandrake comics. I could never part with my big fat book of Sherlock stories.

Great minds read alike
Yes I forgot Mandrake as well, the magician. Vikram aur Betal with the twisted questions and witty answers. I also love snow white and the seven dwarfs (SWA7D) and the sleeping beauty. Even now when I see that lovely snow white and 7 dwarfs movie I sit like a small child and watch it. I remember at my school they had this lovely book on SWA7D which had popup photos in them, I adored the lovely dazzling gowns in it. Hmm sigh!!! how sweet was childhood
how I wish I could go back to being a child again

Yes, Rapunzel! My favorite too.

I saw a commercial recently with a role reversal on tv ( the man was standing on the balcony of a tower with long hair and the girl was summoning him from the garden below). I'm not sure yet if that's a movie in the making. Got to ask my kids about it.

If you really want to think along those lines, you may want to think about a Rangoli drawn with characters in them. I mean characters from your favorite books, as Mrs. Jaya Mohan has done here:

Lovely Disney characters in Rangoli! Don't you think?

Ananth Pai's Amar Chitra Kathaa series has been our all time favorite, those comics were backup if Ajji or doDDappa was not around to tell all mythological stories. I think Uncle Pai left us in February 2011.
Chandamama used to be another, we did not bother the stories were getting repeated in different manner, but still continue to read. One of my friend is still a subscriber of Chandamama & has a room full with all old copies.
Wisdom, Reader's Digest got in when moved to highschool/college...and started to get some downloads/recommendations from Appa for reading better.
