Margazhi dew drops Kolam contest!

Here is the much awaited Margazhi Kolam contest announcement here at ikolam!

All are welcome to participate.

Terms of the contest:

One or two entries per participant.

Kolam has to be a dotted design. Please include separate additional images of dot grids used for your entry/entries.

Medium of use: Rangoli powder or rice paste.

Image format: jpg, gif, or png.

Upload by: January 25th.

Please use the "Upload for contests" option from the main menu to upload entries.

For the old and new contestants, I have some unsolicited advice.

1. Follow the rules to the dot, pun intended Smile If it says, dotted entries, don't send freehand entries. If you are in love with a freehand design, convert it into a dotted pattern. If they ask you for the dotted grid, photograph it before you start the design; do not do it separately afterward.

2. In the same manner, follow the size limitations with a maximum width of about 600 to 700 pixels. Do not make it very big or do not make it too small to tax the eyes.

3. If they say colour is allowed, use colour as very rarely a pure black and white won the contest. But use the colours properly. Maintain proper symmetry for the colour. In the past, I have written two blogs on this aspect. Kindly read them, if you wish.

4. Some people think if one has a large number of dots, it is complicated. Yes, it is. But it is also complicated to follow and the viewer can easily lose track if they are too close. Twenty to 25 is the limit, in my opinion.

5. Mention the number of independent lines for chikku kOlams to enable the viewers to follow them well. If possible, use different colours if you have more than one line.

6. Choose the colour of the floor properly. Mosaic floors are not good for display. A plain floor with black or coloured background is ideal. If your house does not have one, use your friend's house for this purpose.

7. Do not use just one or two of your choice. Do a few and take pictures. Ask your children or some young people to pick out the good ones. Adults will not give a frank opinion. Children do not care. They always give their honest opinion.

8. It is not a crime to employ other people's design, but acknowledge the source and make a change here and there to stamp your own personality and taste.

hai lata...after seeing mylapore festival kolams i thought some rules we should follow..first is kolam dots limits or some max size limit we have to follow then only viewers can judge easily. second is only we should use white kola powder or white rice paste. already diwali rangolis enjoyed in colours. is'nt it? so this time uniformly white we can use. so voters also can judge easily . colours can confuse or misguide the voters..third is photo size we should follow .... what do you say lata....:)

Your idea is welcome Suguna but for those who have submitted their kolams in colour it would be difficult and also there was no mention about excluding colour kolams from the contest...so I think colour kolams are fine for this contest. Moreover Margazhi kolams means big and colourful so I think both should be ok.:) May be for next year we can have a discussion before the contest opens.:)

Just like in that Gulab jamoon ad...this child says to his dad i came 2nd in running race and his dad is so happy...asks him how many children took part...he replies 2 and runs away with another jamoon in his hand...a contest is a contest ...let it be 5 or 10 participants.....lets enjoy that fun of voting and biting our nails for d result....haha :bigsmile:
