Vasanth Navratri

Vasanth Navratri or Chaitra Navratri is an Indian festival that is celebrated in the spring season. This Spring Navratri is a nine-day festival and is dedicated to Goddess Parvati (and is more or less similar to its counterpart – Durga Navratri which is celebrated during October). It is also known as Ram Navratri because Ram Navami falls on the nine day of Chaitra month. This year, the Vasanth Navrati dates are from April 4th to April 12th. The first day of the Chaitra month is celebrated as Ugadi – a new year festival for many south Indians living all over the world. It'll be celebrated on April 4th. It would be nice to read about your experiences regarding this festive season, in case you are one among the many who celebrate the Spring Navratri.

We all know that Golu/Kolu is a well known practice during the October Navratri. Apart from the obvious seasonal differences, can some of you tell us how is the Springtime Navratri different from its Fall counterpart? We’ve already started dreaming of rangolis with leaves, paisleys, and ofcourse flowers too!

Wow, again it's festive season. Ugadhi, Tamil new year, Vishu etc... all festivals are approaching nearer. In Chennai, there is a temple near to my mom's residence (Kamakshi Amman Temple in Villivakkam). There, during this Vasantha Navarathri season, you can see all fresh vegetables and fresh fruits are tied up and hanged near the Sannidhanam. All devotees will bring fruits and vegetables and offer it. The temple people will tie and hang it there. I really don't know what's the logic behind that. But still we continue to do. Mahalakshmi

Happy ugadi and gudi padwa to all. With this the vasant navrathri has also set in. In UP and Himachal, this navratri is as important as the october navrathri. Men, women and children fast and do special Durga puja. All devi temples are crowded all the nine days. Ladies do special puja to young girls in their homes- little girls called kanjaks are invited and gifted with several goodies etc. They read the durga saptasathi all nine days and do bhajans with dance and fanfare. Its interesting to see them dressed up in traditional wear all these days even to office.
