Chhath festival occurs a week after Diwali, and is celebrated for four days. The Sun God is worshipped during Chhath festival, since the Sun is the source for the bountiful harvest through out the year. The women fast during this festival and abstain from drinking water for a period of 24hrs. The worshipers bathe and pray at a large water body such as a lake or a river. Traditional folk songs are sung by the women, and the atmosphere at the lake front is similar to that of a carnival. Kheer (a sweet dish) is one of the dishes prepared on this special occasion.
