very nicely done..When I was a child, my grandmother use to tell me bedtime stories about GanDaBherunDa pakshi. But only now i knew it is a double headed bird.Children these days are missing all this fun.I rather we are in no frame of mind to sit with them for stories.

Good piece of information. Anirudh, I remember to see this emblem on their throne also, correct?
When I was young, we used to devour stories called kASImajilI kathalu wherein we used to read stories about bold princes, helpless but beautiful princesses, cruel demons, mythical birds, etc. Even today, I love to read those. By the way, gaMDabhEruMDa was used by the Vijayanagar kings as well as the nAyaks of Madurai. The Mysore dynasty seems to be the late entrants. Also one of the manifestations of narasiMha (man-lion), the fourth avatAra of vishNu, is this mythical bird (jvAla, ugra, yOgA, lakshmI, gaMDabhEruMDa). Here are two pictures of this bird. In the latter, you may see the bird having the elephants in its claws and lions in the mouth!
