Here is a larger view of the yantrOddhAraka hanuma mentioned by SrImathi lakshmI. Also see the different idols of hanuma here https://picasaweb.google.com/arathibadari/MukhyapranaDevaru# . Many of these were installed by vyAsarAya, the rAjaguru of the emperor kRshNadEvarAya. Most of these are characterised by abhaya hasta as well as a bell attached to the tail. Regards! - mOhana

Forgot to mention yesterday, the hanumAn idols installed by vyAsarAya also have a flower in one hand. This flower is supposed to be the saugandhikA flower, which bhImasEna brought to please draupadi. I don't know how many of you know this story in mahAbhArata. It is a wonderful one. Any way, bhIma is supposed to be the younger brother and manifestation of hanumanta. The followers of jagadguru madhvAchArya believe that madhvAchArya is the manifestation after hanuma and bhIma.

Regarding the Mahabharatha story, i have read this episode in some book. and that is the time when Bhima gains full energy and strength of Hanuman with his blessings to fight against Gauravas. Infact, I believe, Hanuman is the only character which appears both in Ramayana and Mahabharatha.

Rani mam, Ramayana happened in Thretha Yugam (Rama avatar of Mahavishnu). Mahabharatha happended in Duvabara Yugam (Krishna Avatar). Now we are living in Kali Yugam.
At the end of Ramayana, as Mahavishnu was ready to go back to Sri Vaigundam, since the purpose of Rama Avatar has come to an end, he has taken some people along with him and left a few and assigned some job to them (some purpose for their stay) and has also mentioned their period of stay. One such is Hanuman and he has been blessed that he will live in this earth till Kali yugam and his duty is to spread Rama bhakthi to all people. That is why we call him Siranjeevi (no death).
The incident which was quoted by JKM sir, is actually a play by Hanuman only in Mahabharatha. He wanted Bhima to gain more strength to face Gauravas in the war and hence he enacted it (while Bhima went to pluck some flowers for Draupathi). We have so many senior members here who can explain you still more clearly.

Yes, Mrs mahAlakshmi is right about the story. As a child, I used to hear such stories from my mother and used to enjoy quite a bit. For details go to http://www.scribd.com/doc/53727096/37/BHIMA-AND-HANUMAN . I saw some pictures about an enactment of this episode at http://www.flickr.com/photos/picnikk/3395130475/ . Enjoy!
