This is supposed to be the largest "known" banyan tree in the world. Its age is more than 240 years. The highest branch is at about 25 metres. It has nearly 2400 roots. The original trunk seems to have been removed in 1925. The area is like 150 metre sqare. The Adyar tree is a pygmy in comparison. I heard there is a big banyan tree somewhere in the rAyalasIma area of Andhra Pradesh. I'll find out more details about this and let you know.

Looks like the timmamma marrimAnu near kadiri in anaMtapuram district of Andhra Pradesh is the largest banyan tree in the world. A person named timmamma committed sati under that tree and ascended heaven and in her name the tree stands. It is nearly 500 years old. It is spread over 11 acres. See the images at http://www.flickr.com/photos/the-bowies/4387660514/ and http://www.limitthesky.com/?p=47 The calcutta one seems to be the second, the madras one third and the banagalore one the fourth.
