Working mothers beware!

Maid admits to hiring out baby Bangalore is known for its outsourcing - from projects to hired killings. But this one went too far and too cruel. A maid hired by an MNC couple rented out their baby for Rs 100 to a racket of beggars on the streets of Bangalore. Early every morning, the couple used to dress their seven month old baby with the finest of all clothes, keep fresh milk and costly eatables ready and leave the child in the hands of a maid who was hired through an established agency. But as soon as the couple left, the maid used to mix sedatives in the milk, remove all the costly clothes and dress the kid in torn and dirty clothes, according to a report in The Times of India. And then he would be picked up by agents who run a flourishing racket of beggars on the streets of Bangalore. For the whole day the drowsy child would be carried by a beggar on her shoulders and dropped back in the evening to the maid's hands. The maid used to spend her time happily watching the serials and movies on the tv and eat all the stuff left behind for the kid. Every day, the couple were surprised and stumped to find their child inactive and drowsy. He never used to play or create a ruckus. One day, the mother of the kid returned home early from work. To her shock, she found the maid in front of the TV and the baby was missing. The maid went into panic and was confronted by the mother of the kid. The maid then confessed and told her that the child had been rented out and would return by evening. The mother was shocked to find her kid come back dressed in tattered and dirty clothes and sleeping on the shoulders of an unknown woman whose job it was to beg daily. Sources say that Bangalore has a flourishing begging racket run by a mafia and the daily earnings run into a few lakhs. The mafia has divided Bangalore into zones and they send out the beggars. By evening, the agents take a huge pie of the earnings and give a few rupees to the beggars, mostly women. Sometimes, targets are fixed for the beggars and if they fail to `achieve' the sales target, they are sacked.

May be leaving the child in a centre with other children might be a good idea instead of leaving with a babysitter at home. As for drugging the child, this is an age old tradition that is still prevalent. (Has the composition of gripewater changed in recent years?) In the last century they used to give tiny doses of opium to children so that they didn't cry when the mothers were doing manual labour in tea gardens or in other similar chores. Today, they give country liquor for the same purpose. I recently happened to watch the moving movie "kamlI" with Nandita Das. I would strongly recommend it. It is about a lambADi labour family. In this movie also we see infants being pacified with liquor so that the mothers can perform manual labour in the construction of buildings and roads that is supposed to signify the development of modern India. What I like in this movie is along with the sad scenes, there is lot of joy is displayed in the ordinary mundane existence. As for the bangles and the traditional dresses, they are so colourful!

it's really scary to leave the children to anybody. I think the daycare is much better for this.

Another scary incident I know was of my ex-colleague in Bangalore. Both he and his wife were working and after her delivery she had to get back to work in three months time so they got a middle aged lady to take care of their baby daughter and with the thought that everything would be fine went to work... Couple of days went peacefully In a week when the wife would get back from work she would find baby quite sleepy and my friend's dad visited them during the weekend and complained that the whiskey bottle that he had left behind in the fridge was diluted.. The next week my friend's wife got back from work early and heard baby crying very badly. She rang the bell and there was no reply - she desperately called her husband who came rushing home with the spare key - and when they got into the house they found nanny fully drunk on the sofa fast asleep and the baby had fallen down from the cot (god knows when) and was crying in pain and hunger... Only then did they realise that this lady was dipping into the whiskey that was left around and diluting it with water after taking her share.. and not only that, whenever baby would give trouble and cry she would put a few teaspoons down baby's throat and make her sleep so this lady could enjoy her drink and sleep... Shocked by this incident my friend immediately gave this lady the boot and told his wife to leave her job and stay at home. Thank god nothing serious happened to the baby. I was really shaken when I heard this incident - but it was a real eye opener for many of my colleagues...

Let's give one more incident to our Rubyrose Smile

It happened in the late 80's. The nanny of my chemistry teacher almost gorged out the baby's eyes, while the teacher had gone out. Some of the students believed that it was due to bad karma. The teacher was very strict, and students dreaded attending her classes.
