Movie ratings

The question is; how many of us abide by movie ratings? You know; ratings like PG (provide parental guidance to kids while watching with kids), PG 13 (recommended for kids 13 and above), and R rated (adults). I remember while growing up, I don't ever remember coming across such terminology for ratings. My parents left me in my friends house while going for some movies. I guess it was their way of following some "parental rating system" guided by their own intuition.
In our household, we do believe in the rating system, to a certain extent, and follow them. But, I also think, it depends on a child's mental maturity level.

I accept with you. we too follow the rating to some extent. but still i would prefer to watch the movie first before letting my kid to see it, even it is just a cartoon. Now a days even some kids cartoon have violence and matured dialogs.
