How to decrease the size of files

1) I am demonstrating this with a bmp file of nearly 3 MB.
2) Click the right button of the mouse on the picture. Point it to "Open with" and choose "Microsoft Picture Manager".
3) The file will be displayed. Point the mouse on the picture. Its dimensions will be displayed. For this picture it is given as
IMG_0630.JPG, Type JPEG Image, Size 2.67 MB, Dimension 3264 x 2448 pixels.
4) On the top is displayed the number which was used to reduce the picture so that the whole of it is displayed. In this case, it is 18%. Press "Picture" on the menu and press "Resize". I used the number 18 and pressed "OK". Now the number in the top changes from 18 to 100. Save this.
5) When I opened it again with Microsoft Picture Manger, and pointed the mouse, the new dimensions are given as
Size 75.5 KB, Dimension 441 x 588 pixels.
6) Normally for good display, the max width must be less than 700 pixels and the height too about the same. Once again, I always see that the height is about 600 pixels to suit the monitor screen I use.

Now you have a file of manageable proportions. Hope this helps. I have given screen shots of the procedure in the picture.

JKM sir, I have a doubt. I know very little about computers. Here u have specified Microsoft Picture Manager, is this installed in all computers, or we need to install it. Because I tried searching in my computer and could not find it. I could only find Microsoft Photo Editor which I use to resize when I encounter this problem.

Thank you very much JKM Sir. Pushpa mam, i think we have to download it from the net. There are options for free downloads.

Hi Pushpa, Microsoft picture manager get installed when you install Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007. You can see that by clicking on Start->Programs->Microsoft Office->Microsoft Office Tools-> Microsoft Picture Manager .

Mrs padma is right. If you cannot get hold of it, even paint will do. If you open a file in paint and got to the right hand bottom edge and point your mouse there, the coordinates in terms of pixels are clearly indicated. Then you can go to Image->Stretch-and-skew and adjust the dimensions. There are any number of free softwares on the net. The best, in my opinion, are Gimp (which is almost similar to photoshop, but free) and Irfanview. I use both of them and they are indeed good.

i usually resize in acdsee photomanager with d resize (preset)options,, 640x480 is better for our kolams ,,,,it is quite easy when compared to d other options

ACDsee photomanager is NOT free. It is free only for a trial period of one month. GIMP and Irfanview are FREE. Microsoft photomanager comes with Microsoft Office. There is a photomanager in the free Open Office suite. I have not tried it much, though.
