earthquake

ikolam friends,
Just as I was browsing through ikolam.com today at 5pm, I was suddenly thrown out of my chair and my bookshelf was shaking. Yes it was an earthquake!! The fans, lamps and all hanging objects were swinging. Thankfully it was over by the time we rushed down from the 6th floor. Unfortunately we live in the trans yamuna seismic zone and have experienced earthquakes several times( usually in the middle of the night). Though there were no casualties today, i just wanted to share this with you!! Besides, my thoughts went to the thousands affected by the terrible quake and tsunami in Japan.
We ventured back to 6th floor only after an hour fearing after shocks.

It is a fearful feeling when you are right there in the middle of the tremor. In our long stay (9 years) in the Northeast (Shillong) it was almost a daily phenomenon. Suddenly the whole house will shake violently (built on stilts) and the lamp posts will be vibrating madly with the cables touching each other and cracker like fireworks. We got used to it as it became a guessing game of what will be the magnitude of the earthquake and from which direction the shock came from. As my hubby is an earth scientist who was exploring the earthquakes we came to know about many interesting facts about the tremors..

That must have been quite a scare!
We used to live in a place called Mayur Vihar apartments around the same zone that you are talking about (about 19yrs ago). We had experienced some small tremors too when we lived there, but nothing like what you had described. I'm glad you're ok.

I am glad everything is okay, still it must have been scary. Of course, latAjI must have experienced many such tremors during her stay in CA
I experienced three tremors in my life. The first one was in 1962 in Tirupati. My friend and I were walking and I felt it whereas he didn't. The second one was while I was in bengaLUru in 1967. That was the famous Koyna earthquake. It was felt quite strongly even as far as bengaLUru. The third one was a very mild tremor a few weeks ago here in Frederick. It is of a very low magnitude. As usual, sleep-starved me was awake at 4 or 5 in the morning sitting before the computer. Suddenly I felt that there was a movement of my chair (a few millimetres) as if somebody touched it. I felt it but then thought may be I was moving my chair. In a short while, they told in the news that there was an earth tremor centred at about 30 miles from my place.

Thank you one and all for the concern. Brindaji, more info from an earth scientist about earthquakes will certainly be useful for people like me living in the seismic zone. This is not the first time I have experienced it though. My first experience as during the Tehri quake when I was in the Bageshwar valley just across the hills. Being in the valley area instead of the hill slopes helped me then. Later the Bhuj earthquake could be felt as far as Vashi in New Bombay where literally things fell down from shelves, walls developed cracks etc!! Now in the yamuna belt, we get to feel the quakes hitting anywhere in the Himalayan region, Afghanistan or Pakistan or even as far as Iran. We have got used to it now and just tune in to check the magnitude each time.
