Valentine Day Special

One of the finest love stories of ancient India is the marriage of rukmiNI. Her brother was a sworn enemy of Krishna, but she loves only Krishna. So she sends a message expressing her love through a brahmin to Krishna. After sending it, she worries to no end with all sorts of thoughts. Her mental state was brought out brilliantly by the fifteenth century Telugu poet pOtana, who must have lived somewhere around Warangal, near the present Hyderabad. I am very fond of this poem and offering it as a gift to all the lovers around the world.

ghanu DA bhUsuru DEgenO naDuma mArgaSrAMtuDai chikkenO
vini kRshNuM Dadi tappugA dalachenO vicchEsenO yISvaruM-
DanukUliMpa dalaMcunO talapaDO yAryAmahAdEviyun
nanu rakshiMpa ne~ruMgunO ye~rugadO nA bhAgya meTlunnadO
- pOtana, bhAgavatamu 10.1.1725

I believe that the wise brahmin reached his destination
or did he get tired on the way?
Did Krishna listen to my message?
After listening to it, was he pleased
or did he misunderstand it?
Is the God Almighty agreeable to this proposal or not?
Will the Goddess help me or not?
I am not sure how my luck will peter out.

Mr. Mohanaji, last year on one of the V.Day rangoli comments you have mentioned that you remember the words "Khimche KamAn mAroji bAn ruthhai jawAn oh mere prAn" and asked the beginning lines of the song. I got the lines later, but thought of writing only now. The first line is " Nain so nainu naahee milaavo, Madhuru milan gaavaththu aaj"... Is it from the film Janak janak paayal baaje?

nain se nain naheen milaao, based on the rAga mAlgunj, is from jhanak jhanak paayal baaje. Sung by latA and hEmant under the baton of vasant dESAy, it is one of the all-time great Hindi duets. sandhyA and gOpIkRshNA play the role of dancers and lovers in that movie. During this song sequence they enact the roles of ratI and manmatha. This particular song was filmed in the picturesque Mysore bRndAvan gardens. The coloured waters gushing forth from the fountains was certainly a novelty in the fifties. I do have this movie on the old fashioned video cassette. You may watch the song here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zTq7IBqepA . The only artificiality in this is - at the end of the song, the flowers will fall on water and form the letters for INTERVAL ! Thanks for the memories, rAjammA ma'am. Regards! - mOhana
