In the thirteenth century or so, a poet by the name bilvamaMgaLa lIlASuka lived.
He was the author of SrIkRshNakarNAmRtam. Besides jayadEva's gitagOviMda and
nArAyaNatIrtha's SrIkRshNalIlAtaraMgiNi, this is one of the best works in Sanskrit on
kRshNa. It is not certain where he lived. Some say he is from the Andhra region and
others he is from Kerala. That is beside the point. This is one book I try to read
when I am sad. Here is my mother's day favourite from this book.
mAta@h - O mother
kim yadunAtha - what is it my darling
dEhi chashakam - please give me a cup
kim tEna - why
pAtum payas - to drink milk
nAstadya - there is no milk now
kadAsti - when then
vA niSi - in the night
niSA kA - what is night
vA aMdhakArOdayE - when darkness descends
aamilyAkshiyugam - then he closed both his eyes
niSApyupagatA dEhIti - it is dark now and so it is night, give me now
mAtur muhur vakshOjAMbarakarshaNOdayatakara@h kRshNa@h -
krshNa began to pull the sari end from the bosom of his mother
sa pushNAtu na@h - may He protect us all!
The poem after this is also equally beautiful. I'll post it tomorrow.
Happy Mother's Day!
