Mardi Gras - February 12

Submitted by admin on Fri, 02/08/2013 - 14:32
Mardi Gras is a festival celebrated prior to fasting season of Lent. It is also known as Shrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday. It refers to the practice of the last night of consuming rich array of foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten period, that begins on Ash Wednesday. This year, Mardi Gras occurs on February 12. Celebrations include floats, carnivals, parades, sport competitions, dancing, and parties where people celebrate with fancy costumes and masks. Margi Gras celebrations are more popular in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Barranquilla, Colombia; Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago; Quebec City, Canada; Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico; and New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. In America, Mardi Gras was introduced as a French Catholic tradition. Color of Mardi Gras The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are; Purple (symbolic of justice), Green (symbolic of faith), and Gold (symbolic of power). People wear purple, green, and gold during the celebrations. There are lots of long glittering colorful beads worn with pride by participants in carnivals and parties. Bead garlands are also thrown from floats and balconies, and given away as trinkets to people who have come to watch the parades. One could learn more about the history and folk art of Mardi Gras rituals from Museums and other historical societies. Mardi Gras at iKolam! It is still the beginning of the year, and we are excited about introducing some new traditions of our own, here at ikolam! We too, would like to have more fun with our members and would like to celebrate with the royal color combinations of Purple, Green and Gold! And yes, we would like some of the glitter and glitz, in the form of Rangolis from our artists. Please let us know if you find this theme exciting as much as we do. We sincerely hope, our members would make and share their Mardi Gras rangolis with all of us. :) Mardi Gras, for 2013: February 12

Oh ahduva...vandhu...enna solla varenna....when I was done making a plant stake in your name, I realized that the whole garden had gone into hibernation, since it was winter! :Sp |( :steve: So, I'm sincerely hoping that it would come back alive for this spring. Nothing gets stolen in this site. But, they are allowed to hibernate, and come back too. Let me tell you a secret; ikolam is a trap. Once the rangolis make it in, they don't get out. If by some reason they do, then I don't take it easy (for people who post in this site only exclusively) :8) Also, ikolam is somewhat like real life; it is next to impossible to grow corn or sunflowers in the middle of winter. Don't you think? In case if any other sites/blogs/social media are offering to grow such things "anytime" for you, there might be a catch. ;)

Thanks your highness! No, we would never pressure you to provide something with very little time. Feb 12 is the actual date for the festival, but, you are free to upload something anytime within the next two weeks, or month end. No hurry. Take it easy. It is supposed to be fun, not work. :D

Please make do with what you have at hand. Gold color is not easy to achieve by mixing colors at home. If possible try to mix in shades of yellow/orange to get something close, but otherwise we would be happy to see your designs even without the gold color. We didn't mean to make this harder on anyone, they were just suggestions. It is hard enough to get something done among other responsibilities. Thank you for being interested :D
