History of Indian Film Music (bollywood)

Heard this while driving around today on NPR's The World (www.npr.org). Very interesting take on Indian film music.

How did I miss this Wink Thanks maNIjI! Yes, it is true. In the early days they used to have trolleys with musicians and the orchestra along with the shooting. In fact, my father used to tell stories about the silent film days when a local orchestra will be playing music in the cinema hall when the silent film is running on the screen! Saigal and Mullick used to be the star singers those days. Ashok Kumar (brother of Kishore) also sang. His Kismet songs were a rage. Actually, early Hindi film music songs are available at the marvellous site http://www.indianscreen.com/ . In the south, of course, the Tamil films had M K tyAgarAja bhAgavatar and the Telugu films had nAgayya as singing stars. In the Tamil we had MS and vasantakOkilam (what a pity she passed away prematurely) and in Telugu sUryakumAri, niece of prakASam, the first CM of Madras Presidency and bhAnumati as singing stars. I do not know how many on this forum are aware of VAK Ranga Rao who has gramaphone records dating to 1900s! I have a friend in England who is a walking encyclopedia on the early Telugu film music. In fact, he has lots of records on early film music as well as AIR records. Interestingly, some record companies went to him to bring out cassettes and cds! The early Telugu songs may be heard at http://www.oldtelugusongs.com/ . Early south Indian film music was very classical based. Thanks again for the memories!
