About a pattern of saumya vijay ...

About a pattern of soumya vijay that attracted my attention.
There is a statement in telugu - evaDi gOla vADidi. That means each one has his pet likes and dislikes. When something attracts them, each person tries to react according to his/her own likes and dislikes. The other day I viewed a really beautiful chikku kOlam of SrImati saumya - http://www.ikolam.com/node/19811?p=7435 . It attracted my attention immediately. It is nothing but a modification of a 2 x 3 sOnA pattern (now you know why I preambled this blog like that :-). A 2x3 sOnA and a 3x2 sOna (or 2x3 rotated by 90 deg) were placed side by side with a gap as shown. This twin pattern was rotated by 90, 180, 270 degrees and joined together. Then this square pattern becomes a sOnA square with two lines. She filled the central space also with a 2x3 related sOnA with more than one line. I recreated the whole rangOli in my own way and the central pattern I redrew in such a way that it has only one line. While she drew this only for a 2x3 sOnA, one can extend this to any sOnA pattern with a single line. I already extended this concept to a 3x4 and 3x5 sOnA pattern which I will upload in the usual way to the rangOli section. I am writing this to explain the basic principle behind this. I am thankful to saumya for making me think along these lines.

Thanks for giving a new insight to the above common kolam, which I have drawn without knowing its base.

Thank you sir for giving such a wonderful explanation to an otherwise normal kolam . Mostly the kolams are drawn just with some calculation of the dots and not with any reason why it is done so. Now at least we get some idea about some designs with your explanations.
