Pancha Dhanya sunDal (five pulses)

Submitted by anirudh on Wed, 10/24/2012 - 23:33
Got mom to prepare sunDal/ Usali for the last day pooja. Ingredients: Black/brown Chick Peas(channa/ kaDale kaaLu) - 1 cup (Can be replaced with Kabul channa too) Green Gram (moong/ hesaru kaaLu) - 1 cup Green Peas (mutter/ bataaNi kaaLu) - 1 cup Black eyed peas (Alasande kaaLu) Groudnuts - 1 cup Water 9-10 cups Salt - 1.5 table spoon/ as per taste. Seasoning: Oil - 3-4 tea-spoons/ as needed Mustard Seeds 1 tea-spoon A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing) Green Chillies - 2-3/ as per taste chopped Curry leaves - 2-3 stalks Garnishing: Coriander Leaves chopped - 2 table-spoons/as needed Grated fresh coconut - 1 Cup Grated Carrot - 1 Cup Lemon juice - 2 table spoons/ as per taste Grated Raw Mango as per taste (seasonal as we get only during Feb/March) :) American sweet corn - 1/2 Cup/ as per taste This should serve for 5 people, but depends on the size of the measuring cup :). Method: Wash the pulses throughly and then soak all the pulses except ground nuts in water for 3-4 hours. Now need to cook all the pulses with ground nuts in a cooker. Switch on the stove. Place the cooker, put all the pulses into cooker, add water (should be 2inches above the pulses - i am sure all of you aware of this measure) add salt as per taste. Cook until you hear one whistle. After the cooker cools, remove the pulses and drain the water (btw do not throw the water, you can use this make some soup :) ). Now add the seasoning, take a thick bottom vessel or a pan, pour oil, once it gets hot add mustard seeds, wait for to it to crackle, then add hing, you start to smell the aroma, now add curry leaves, green chillies, reduce the flame/ put to sim. Now add the cooked pulses and mix well. The last step is to garnish, add coriander leaves, coconut, carrot, corn and mix well. Switch off the stove, add lemon juice, mix well and serve. I have not put grated mango as its seasonal and also it was not added in yesterday's preparation :). Normally this gets added after the chilles and cook 1 or 2-mins till it becomes little tender. My sister wanted to make Corn-Pomegranate kosambari (salad), hence had got them. This gave us the thought of adding Corn & Carrots to give a twist to mom's recipe. We all enjoyed this making and eating. Give it a try.... & enjoy maaDi ;-) :) :)

The third padi has Ram, Laxman, Seetha and Hanuman, shankaracharya, Titwala Ganapathy, Shivan-Parvathy and many devis. The bottom Padi has Chettiyar, fruits, vegetables and Marapachi. I have decorated a gauri doll and have draped a blue saree proper 5.5 mtr along with jewellery decoration. She welcomes all the guest. My sons helped me in making a small village near the Tirupathy temple, that we kept in the top of a mountain. All the grass and the plants in the garden are real. Apart from the padis and normal Kolu I have a theme each year. This year my theme is "SAVE THE GIRL CHILD" I painted various pictures in a ply and wrote a few captions in it, like Man thinks he is a HERO, but if he removes HER, he'll just remain a O. Real men dont use violence etc. In front of that i have kept Rajarajeshwari Devi, along with SouthIndian marriage and Rath Yatra on either sides. I stay in Mumbai, I have a big social circle and people from many culture visit us for Haldi Kumkum. I wanted every lady to spread the message of saving the girl child...by educating their servant maid. I believe EACH ONE TEACH ONE. I had approx. 96 ladies visiting my house...even if 50% of the ladies follow what message i had to spread and act on it i will be satisfied. I circulated them printed sheets of the importance of self rights, acting against violence, educating girl child, fighting for their rights etc along with the help line numbers for women rights. My theme has been appreciated by the Times Of India Bombay Times, on the 21st of October, Navratri Special in page number 21 as SOCIAL MESSAGE THIS NAVRATRI. THANK YOU Regards Lata Ravi

Krishna Rukmini

Submitted by Usha.S on Sun, 10/21/2012 - 20:59
Hello all, Krishna and Rukmini are the made-for-each-other couple. Though Radhe was his childhood friend who made him happy, Rukmini, throughout her life, stood by Krishna in all his ups and downs. She is a perfect woman and perfect wife. That is how I feel. That is the reason, I thought I will transform the Marapachi dolls into Krishna and Rukmini. I did not buy or use very valuable commodities to decorate the dolls, but used only available-at-home things and a few low-cost accessories from the shop. I fell in love with my own creation, as they looked fantabulous to my eyes, and the dolls perfectly matched the couple, unless otherwise told. This is my first-ever contest in my life participated. Let me have your views about this. Thank you all. Usha Subramanyam
