Ugadhi

The festival of Ugadi, is the New Year in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is based on the lunar calendar and so is also called Chandramana Yugadi. For the year of 2008, Ugaadhi is going to be celebrated on the April 7th. Each year has got its own specific name. The name for this New Year is Sarvadhaari. On this day Telugu people prepare a side-dish called the "Ugaadi Pachadi", which is a chutney with sweet, sour, savory, pungent and bitter tastes. It is made using six ingredients (six tastes or shadhruchulu), such as salt, green chillies or peppers, tamarind, neem flowers, jaggery and raw mangoes. Ugadi pachadi is known as Bevu Bella in Karnataka. The philosophy behind this is that life is a mixture of different kinds of experiences and we have to face it with an even mind.
