Poochoodal

It would be nice to know what this celebration is all about. Poochoodal is a Tamil word, and it means - "decorating with flowers". Could someone please tell us a bit more about it?

Poochoodal is done for a girl who is conceived for the first time. It is combined with 'valakaappu/seemandham'! The girl's sisters-in-law arrange for this. They decorate the girl with varieties of flowers over her hair and other ladies follow by adding on! Songs and lullabies are sung by everyone. Now it is scientifically proved that the baby can respond to external sounds from 5 months onwards! So, suitable songs can be sung for such occasions. The main purpose is to keep the girl cheerful and happy during pregnancy!

Thank you for the explanation, some of us (atleast in the US) are only aware of valakaappu/seemandham. Although we could tell that Poochoodal is some kind of a ritual done during the baby shower, the practice of the girls' sisters-in-law arranging this is information for us. :)
